About the company

Laghbani Consulting is a Swiss education consultancy headquartered in Zurich that specializes in placing international students, primarily from Arabic-speaking countries, into German universities. Founded and run by Mahmoud Laghbani, it covers the full journey: admission pathways, university applications to public and private partners, blocked account setup, health insurance, visa consultation, and post-arrival support like accommodation.

The business works through a network of partner agencies across the region and partner universities in Germany, including FOM University of Applied Sciences, University of Europe for Applied Sciences, ISM, and Constructor University. It is a small team, so every system I built was used directly by the founder, the agencies, and the students themselves.

01

A platform for a real business

Before I joined, student records, applications, and documents lived in spreadsheets and chat threads. As enrollment grew that became the bottleneck: agencies could not see the status of their students, payments were tracked by hand, and every document had to be prepared manually.

I designed and built a multi-role student management platform on Next.js and TypeScript with three distinct views: students track their own application journey and upload documents, partner agencies follow the progress of everyone they enrolled, and administrators manage the full pipeline.

Because the team was small and distributed between multiple locations, the platform had to be usable without training. I kept the workflows as close as possible to how the consultancy already operated, then automated the repetitive parts around them.

02

Integrations instead of reinvention

Rather than building everything custom, I wired together proven services so the consultancy could keep using tools it already trusted:

Stripe for handling consulting and service payments, Clerk for authentication across students, agencies, and staff, Airtable as the operational data layer the team already knew how to use, and Google Drive for per-student document storage that stayed accessible outside the app.

This meant zero migration friction for the founder's existing workflow while still giving everyone one place to work from.

03

Document automation on a VPS

Every student needs personalized documents: a tailored CV for university applications and a power-of-attorney form that lets the consultancy act on the student's behalf. Doing this by hand for dozens of students each semester was slow and error-prone.

I built a Node.js API deployed on a VPS that generates these documents automatically from each student's profile data, formatted correctly and ready to send. What used to take careful manual work per student now happens in seconds at enrollment time.

04

Working inside the operation

My role went beyond code. Because I worked directly with the founder and communicated daily with agencies and students in Arabic and English, I helped onboard partner agencies onto the platform, triaged issues as they came up, and fed recurring requests back into the product.

Operating remotely across time zones taught me to write things down: clear docs, obvious UI states, and predictable data flows replaced what would normally be handled by sitting next to someone.
